Hello there,

My first post here! I was referred here by Beau Ouimette, aka Aquachigger. I watch his Youtube channel a lot and figured he may be able to help with an id. He wasn't sure what this item is, but suggested that I post it here. So here goes! This looks to be a combination lock or something of the sort, but I really don't have any idea what it is or how old it is. Found on the banks of the Ottawa River in Gatineau Quebec. It's about 2x2 inches and is quite solid and heavy. IMG_20170227_082302.jpgIMG_20170227_082233.jpgIMG_20170227_082225.jpg

I'd really appreciate any insight that you have! Thanks,

Jess

Vintage post office box they were 8 digit. The combination was three digits but the mechanism had 8 digits to it.Some had the alphabet and two dials but some used digits and a single dial.Your part could be the internal part behind the faceplate.223c77c46c8f344dce4f25d48b847309.jpg

I'm thinking some kind of old variable speed control switch

Taz has it, good id! That's exactly what it is. I've seen those motors in a lot of 1960's and 70's era record players and I'm sure they were used in a lot of other things as well.

I watch all of Chigs videos as well, he's got me seriously considering taking up water hunting down here, just need to find spots with no gators....

Taz is right should have recognized it, have changed quite a few in exhaust fans.Nice I.D. the numbers are weird though.

Yes, Back-of-the-boat, I tried to find something with a dial like this, and failed.

The motor is a good id ... but I was impressed with the po box that you came up with, also.

Thanks to all! This has definitely been an educational experience! So it's pretty much decided, this is a C frame motor. The dial is still a bit of a mystery though. If anyone has any more insight on what the motor might have powered (and what the dial was related to!) your thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks,

Jess
