I found this years ago and have tried a few times to get an ID of what it is, and age and have come up empty, so hopefully some good input from fellow TNetters on this piece.

It is a small but heavy piece, most likely brass and is rather thick. It weighs 3.73 grams, is 17.7mm in length and 14.2mm in width with a thickness of 3.5mm.

It has been so long since I found it I do not remember what type of site it was found at, but would have to assume one of my very early 1790's-1840 sites which is the vast majority of my sites.

So, what is it, not a cufflink I don't think, not a button, more like a heavy duty type of clasp? :dontknow: Also, what era........

I think the North & Judd is a very likely possibility. Could it have been from the spur part where the leather strap was attached?

I was thinking 1/2 of a buckle :dontknow:

This relic has been one of the most hard ones I ever found to even get an identity of what it is, yet alone time frame. It could be North and Judd, but I believe they did not put anchor trademark on until later in 1800s, even though I believe they were founded 1812-1830 time frame....

If I had not put size reference in there, I had not previously (years ago) and poster thought it was part of a buckle also Cru, but way too small I believe to be anything like that.....

I don't think its too small for a buckle piece but I haven't seen one identical so only a guess really.

What's also unusuall about it Don is the fixing or attachment piece at the back, it seems to be of centre :icon_scratch:

Looking closer at the tab, it is only partly there, both ends appear to be broken off from something, but the tab itself is attached to the part itself, not bent over.....
So overall, it is part of something, not a complete item I guess.

Been trying to think outside the box and with the indentation area maybe that is where something latched closed to this item on whatever it was attached to. With the broken ends being there, meaning it was part of something larger and with the indentation at that area, it reminded me of one half of some type of latching mechanism. Perhaps part of some equipment, cover for something (sword?) or :dontknow:

:icon_scratch: I was wondering if this could be part of two, with one piece missing :icon_scratch: could be a cufflink button :read2:

labeep, I was thinking along your tongue and loop also; but even with the wreath around it , it would be very small. It does seem though that whe the broken piece is placed at what might be its original angle it makes a bigger area for a belt then the hight of the oval. I tried drawing a little picture (sad huh?) of what would think a wreath and tongue might look like, but despite the fact the belt attachement on the oval is fastened to the back side allowing a wreath to be in place, I don't know how the tab on the wreath would get in place easily?
