Sounds like a 3 cent piece. They usually show up in the foil range. There are two different types. The early ones are silver and later ones are nickel. Could explain why it was in the foil nickel range. The nickel ones are a little larger than a dime while the silver ones are a little smaller than a dime.
 

Question: Is it 3/8 inch WIDE or 3/8 inch THICK? Makes a big difference.
 

It is 3/8 of an inch wide. I will try to get a picture up. definitely not 3 cent piece.
