Unhappy Fishermen & women!

It isn't just some disgruntled archeologists that cop an attitude about us
undersea explorer guys & girls!

Yesterday we had to get in close to the south jetty at Jupiter Inlet so as
to investigate a report of an anomaly.... (see photos)

Before you new it two or three of the fishermen were jumping up and
down Like we were ruining their lives
and we were environmental terrorists or something!

I tried to explain to them the fish were going to be happy about us stirring
up the waters and, oh by the way we had permits and the right to be there
but... it was almost a no win situation brewing....

After over 20 years of this - like an olden day sea captain I saw trouble on the horizon
but decided to hold our ground as it could not be avoided....

Next thing you know there are sheriffs on the end of the jetty....
This was actually what I was waiting for... I asked them to explain to the fishermen
we had permits and had every right to be there
They did while at the same time asking me about whether I was spilling any
oil in the water... I explained to them about a 3 point anchoring system and
how if a boat has wet exhaust and isn't moving {got to get them injectors checked and cleaned}
you are going to see some blow by....

Anyhow the sheriffs calmed the fishermen down and then left....
After the sheriffs left..... I dusted the hole one more time
just to establish prescience - then left.

I don't know if this is going to attach but if it does take a look!

This happened to me Dom on the Northside of the Juno Beach Pier. I attempted to start my anchoring points close to the Pier and the people fishing there started to shout every obscenity in the book, and when that failed to curtail our objective there, they started hurling lead weights at us attached to treble hooks. It became too dangerous for my crew to continue so we left the area. It reminded me of a land rush, "I guess they felt because they had fishing lines in the water, they owned that piece of oceanscape." LMAO

Because of irresponsible reporting, or the lack thereof, the general public still believes we're in essense "pirating" in those areas. It would fare us well to spell out the facts as to the complexities a part of our operations, the costs involved, the myriad of permits that have to be secured and the agencies that oversee what we do.

The bottom line is without our operations (historic shipwreck salvage), anything of historic trait and value would be forever buried beneath the sand and that same general public would never share in the history being recovered and preserved.

Dom, I really wanted to climb the jetty and throw that whiny punk over the rail.

Some people are just looking for a reason to start an argument or complain. No matter how nice you were, they would have done the same thing.

My question is, what was the annomoly?

O.K. so my spelling sucks {after the fact, I spelt it white}

If what is suppose to be there turns out to actually be there....
well it will be exciting and good for everyone....

It will also most certainly bring out all the butt holes as well....

It was quite impossible to run out to the jetty and hope everyone was going to stay
there while you were running back to the dock and then pilot the boat out the inlet!

We were close enough to carry on a conversation with them... without raising our
voices.... The weather and then funding - - - in that order controls our ability to work
next to the jetty it also requires a set of nuts as well....

We had more than acouple of them on board

I would have called law enforcement and have them explain it to them. I have had alot of trouble from people that dont know what a dive flag is, mostly fishermen and jet skiers. I love to see the idiots run their boats on the rocks and pay through the nose for a tow. it serves them right.

although hosing them down sounds like fun, some idiot might go to his car and get a gun, this is how things escalate. is it worth dying over ? you pay taxes so get your moneys worth and drop a dime on them. I hope this is just an isolated incident.

So the cops were worried about the diesel putting oil in the water?They must have been total idiots.All internal combustion motors put oil into the water no matter if its a diesel or 4 stroke or a 2 stroke.A high powered water pump and fire hose nozzel would cool off those fishermen and women.When we were doing the salvage in the marina,fishermen and jet skiers would run right up on my dive bouys.Frank would just pull out his gun and chase them away.People even stole our dive flags when we were underwater.And bouys marking wrecks hazardous to boaters.

The sheriffs were just responding to the complaining fishermen.
I made sure to shut down once any blow by began to build up.

They weren't even there when any of the black soot was present!
I explained to them that it was a natural occurrence when any boat
is running - with wet exhausts and held in one place with three or
more anchors... The cops weren't the problem.

It was the unreasonable fishermen - like some underwater archeologists!
They think one the getty was constructed - it has become their personal
casting platform or something like that.

The next time we decide to work there - I am going to post a sign at the
end of the sea wall explaining what we are doing, that we have permits in place
and we are not going to be there for very long.

Maybe next time, bring an ice chest with a huge fish in it and give it to them to take home and brag they caught it. Maybe that will work.

Great post Capt. Dom and kudos for standing your ground! Wish I had been onboard with you just for the scrappy piece of it - a Florida Cracker like me is always down for a scrap when someone goes bitching like that!

Mad4wrecks who is a good church going guy

was asking me if if I wanted him to climb up on the getty
and slap the kid around...

After trying to answer his complaints, as best I could I just
told him I have been doing this right here longer than he was
old and to think about what the chinamen said...
