hey everyone...hope y'all had a merry christmas....i have a question about lighting ....the lake where i hunt is very dark water...after you get in about waist deep you cant see the bottom.....some spots are very hard clay and i get signals there that i cant scoop...there is a lot of softer clay around but this one particular area is super hard.....the question i have is this...if i strap an underwater light to the shaft on my MD around waist high and let it shine pretty much on my coil....y'all think this may help me recover a target on this hard clay?.....if i can see the target I may be able to kick it into my scoop (should be laying on top of the clay cuz i dont think it would sink)

I've found things into the clay. Maybe here in MN when it freezes it moves stuff around at the lake bottom? Be careful if you can't see the bottom of the lake. Lakes have many holes and drop offs..

What kind of scoop? Does it have a point to pierce the clay to scoop chunks?

Good luck!

no it doesnt have a point it will get small chunks up but it is way too time consuming..this clay is really hard.....also the lakes and stuff dont freeze here....im not saying that there isnt anything down into the clay but fresher drops will be at least visible for a long time...this stuff is just a little softer than concrete lol

also the spot i hunt does have gradual drop offs i have been all over it and know it pretty well....still once i get chest deep i go slow and feel with my feet before taking a step

If the water is that dark, I wonder if a light would illuminate it enough for you to see the bottom while chest deep. However, if you don't try, you never know. Better to try and fail than to never try at all. I would assume there are waterproof lights out there you could strap on the scoop handle/detector shaft or both. Would be worth trying unless they cost a bit too much.

If the water is that murky a light won't help as the beam has to hit the bottom and travel back to the surface where you can see it. This still doesn't get it into your scoop. Plus many targets will be just under the surface of the clay or have derbies over it. You need a better scoop like the Sunspot and learn scoop positioning to get the target into the scoop. The Sunspot is more rounded on the bottom than the Diamond Head so you have a better chance of being a couple inches off on placement to the right or left. We call it trying to scoop a dime off the sidewalk.

Hey Brother,

Sandman is right, you def wont be able to see. Unless you get a major waterproof spotlight and a mask and snorkel but then your looking at some pricey stuff with light and more equipment to work with. You need to work on that scoop positioning, you can also sharpen the scoop get it nice and sharp and it should do the work of going right through the clay. My dad has actually got another handle attachment welded to his scoop to help with harder surfaces, that maybe a good idea for you as well.
