Understanding your X-TERRA

Digger I must say that this has been one of the most helpful posts I have read! Very good information for those of us that use the X-terra models. I have had mine for about a year, and haven't put more than maybe 80 hours on the machine. I have yet to dig a silver coin, but in the last week, after rereading all of the info. on the internet and the owners manual again, I went and dug 2 wheat pennies, and a buffalo nickel. I wasn't a fan of the machine at first, and was kicking myself for not just saving for an e-trac, but after some serious experimentation I have started to find a happy medium for the machine. I do have one question about the "whisper" targets. I also have noticed that the X-terra 70 doesn't really whisper as the E-trac does. I seem to get a constant signal or a seriously broken one. The only true whispers I have heard were both small pieces of foil or parts of a pulltab at over 8 inches deep. Why is it that the X-terra doesn't "whisper" like similar Minelab machines do? Once again, great write up and thanks a million for the information!

To answer your question directly, I don't know why the X-70 doesn't give a whisper signal on those coins at the brink of being too deep to detect. All of the X-TERRA's, with the exception of the 705, either beep or they don't. The audio may be "narrower" as I explained. But it isn't like the "whisper" signals I've heard on many other detectors. One may first think that not providing a "whisper" is a sign they don't detect the deep ones. But after having used them since I first Field Tested them, I disagree. The X-TERRA, when properly set up, is an excellent detector whose depth is remarkable. And, it is capable of finding targets at depths most other detectors simply can't hit. I am not an engineer, nor have I had access to the schematics. But I can only assume that VFLEX (combination of digital and analog), combined with special audio circuitry, is what makes the X-TERRA hit as hard on deep coins as it does on the shallow ones.

I mentioned the 705 being different...... my 705 will give a more narrow signal on some of the exceptionally deep targets. Targets that simply won't beep at all on the other X-TERRAs, using the same coil. Again, I don't know why. I only know it does. But I would suspect it has something to do with the upgraded software in the 705, compared to the X-70. And the ability to more finely tune the settings, than the X-30, 305, X-50 and 505. Thank you for all the information. I just picked up an x-terra 50 and have only put about 10 hours into it, due to this everlasting winter. I will be going out again this week and re-reading this topic many times over. I hope to use this information to help increase my finds. Thanks again

Fantastic Post. I know I will read and re-read your post again and again. I and my buddy both use the X-terra 70. I started hunting in all metal and very rarely leave AM. I love the way you can tell good targets from bad. I have to say, I can pull out shallow sounds and love to dig them. I went across a field one day, just digging nickel after nickel and deep. That day I must have dug 5 War nickels and a couple of buffalo's.

The first part of February we were able to get out and dig one day here in Ohio. We hunted a park that has been pounded to death and we both dug silver and wheat's, I even dug a whisper signal and dug out a cracker jack metal trolley car.

I love my X-terra 70, but I know I will try a lot of your information.

Thanks Again for this information, I can't wait to try out all of it.

Best Regards, Ringfinder

I would like if you could post the old "understanding your X-Terra" Its very good and I did not have a chance to print it out before you took it off line. Thanks [email protected]

I'm updating some material and adding pictures. Shouldn't be much longer. Thanks for the patience. HH Randy

I reference this page often and can't wait for the updartes. I just came back to find uot if you have info on the best coil for coin shooting with the 50. I use the standard 7.5 khz and it has a hard time discriminating in our minerilzed soil here.

If you're hunting in an area that is heavily mineralized, regardless of your detector, a DD coil will perform better than a concentric. If I were going to chose one coil to coin shoot in any area, it would be the 6-inch DD at 18.75 kHz. The high frequency is my least favorite frequency on the X-TERRA. But the small DD coil is unbelievable at target separation and sensitivity to small targets. And the depth will surprise anyone who hasn't tried one. I feel confident in saying you'll find coins deeper with the small DD than you are the 9-inch concentric. Partly due to the DD design and partly due to better target separation. JMHO HH Randy

P.S. The article "Understanding your X-TERRA" is currently being published in an ebook format. My agreement with the party who is publishing it was that there will be no charge for anyone to read it. I'll keep you posted as to the release date!
