Uncle Tom's Cabin Dish

This scene of little Eva dressing Uncle Tom is one of the most popular from the 1852 book. I believe this little dish is from the 1850's (not 100% certain though) Notice the E in Eva is missing which makes me think this may be a copy of a copy (again not 100% certain). There is no name of any maker or other marks as to where this was made. I am unable to find this picture from the original picture in the book to compare with. I believe this is earthenware from the chip on the back.

Does any one happen to know where I can find the original picture and any other information regarding who, when & where this dish was made is appreciated..Thanks in advance to all.................

I will say that it is definitely a rare plate. Too bad the condition is so poor. The image looks close to a copy of the wood engraving done by George Cruikshank. I would agree on the age of the plate being in the mid 1850's probably, because the book was so very popular during that time period. Here is some info on Ceramic and Porcelain Representations of Uncle Tom’s Cabin- Chipstone

Thanks diggummup...., I had also found that site along with one other, and other than those two sites it seems there is little information available. This dish certainly has age and yes it is a shame that the chip is there, however I really don't mind as I am finding out there are very few of these. Thanks again for your input........

That dish is quite nice !!! The chip ..... It's on the back - which is better than the front . I think it is a fantastic piece . jmo

You should try to get rid of some of the crazing stains- McCoy Pottery Collectors Society

That's the one thing I do not do as it is always best to leave all the original patina on an item. Some items may warrant doing that depending on the material they are made of however this little dish will be treasured for what it is in it's original condition.... Thanks & have a good one.....
