This weekend is one that that I wish all weekends would model.

Friday: Met up with a (rare) craigslist lead because he advertised bulk wheaties at market value. I told him I collect large cents so he showed up with an entire album of them plus a few extras. We negotiated on the entire lot of 65 coins for $450. Probably one of my best purchases all year!
My dad showed up later in the evening for a family dinner. He dropped off his lifetime Bonsai collection for me to shelter for the winter. He brought me some goodies! He just sold his antebellum bed & breakfast in NC. In clearing stuff out, he brought me 3 boxes of dishes, glass, and silverware. He also brought me scrap wire, brass, and copper! My dad is awesome!

Saturday: Showed up at an advertised garage sale in the freezing cold (I was the first customer). I spied a small box of trinkets and coins. He wanted $10, pass. I asked if he had any more coins and that sparked a 30 minute encounter. He started pulling out coins all over the place. Most were those crap collector series or bulk foreign coins. I was picking out 1 or 2 coins here and there. In the end, I ended up buying a handful of coins and a small box of jewelry.

The scores:

-65 large cents with 3 half cents and the whitman album, almost every date is present from 1800-1857 minus 1 or 2 coins but plus a few extras like 1798. 40% are culls or damaged in some way beyond "circulation wear" - $450
-empire sterling weighted compote (probably only worth scrap as it has some damage) - free
-entire set of wm rogers plated presidential spoons - free
-dennis the menace spoon - free
-wallace sterling tea spoon - free
-(2) .800 silver spoons with hallmarked bowls - free
-peru souvenir spoon marked 925 - free
-R Hascy coin silver tea spoon, my favorite, appears to be from 1840s handmade by an American silversmith - free
-a few bags of scrap metal wire, copper, brass - free
-big stack of pewter plates - free
-2 more boxes of glass and dishes (to be searched, will post results later) - free
-(11) silver coins including 1921 walker (fake!), barber half, 2 canadian 50 cent pieces, etc - $45 (probably paid too much considering the walker is a fake)
-2000 cheerios penny in original packaging - $5
-small box of men's jewelry, this had the gold filled NRA pin that I sold with the other NRA stuff in 5 minutes yesterday, also included 2 earrings that I believe to be k gold 1.4 grams, also a large gold filled bracelet - $3

Wow! How did you know the Walker is fake?

That book of cents is a great buy! I'd love to find that for that same deal anyday! That 1798 is the icing on the cake!

Great stuff Ben! Did you ever make it down to your dad's B&B and metal detect the grounds before he sold the place? I would have for sure! Love the coin silver spoon and the LC's. I only have a couple of those. Looks like silver was popular this weekend. I found a few nice pieces myself.

Nice haul JB! Love the coins and silver items, makes me wonder what other items the seller had and didn't think about bringing out for you. Worth braving the cold for garage sale gold!

About 2 years ago I pulled a sterling baby food pusher out of the back. Also pulled about 2 dozen wheaties and a single Merc.

Yea that's a great score. The 1798 and 1804 should get you to half if not more of your $450 investment. I cant tell if the 1804 is a more uncommon one, some can go for $$$.

The 1804 LARGE cent is one of the key dates to the series.

The one pictured is an 1804 HALF cent. A better date but sadly not key.

The 1798 is AG at best and is worth about $40.
