I know that UMC developed the 45 Colt in 1871 and stopped producing military cartridges in about 1888. My question is when did they stop producing them for the commercial market? Was it before their merger with Remington in 1911? I found a 45 Colt casing at the Spanish-American War campsite yesterday and was curious about it's age.

1912 ish. After that it was "REM-UMC" until 1952, and variations like "R-P" (Remington-Peters) after that.

I think.

I guess I can safely say 1873-1912 then. But, even if that is the production era that doesn't mean it was fired and lost then. It could have been anytime after that.
