This large Rev War bar button was dug in March 2023 Mass-Conn area and was a bucket list item as I had never dug one before. But to find the largest sized button of this type 33mm currently an unknown size was more than I could have hoped for. It was found in a field across from a mid to late 18th century home site. Enjoy. I did a digital restoration based on the exact features of this buttons die strike design.

Great piece of history that you recovered digging the button.
Does it still have a shank, and what other sizes of bar buttons were made?

Most if not all Patriotic bar buttons from the Revolutionary War period are in the 22mm to 23mm size similar in size to the Patriotic rattlesnake button sizes .. There is no loop attachment shank on the back of this 33mm large bar button I dug. The smaller bar button pictured was the only one in my collection that I bought from a digger in Virginia 22mm so I was extremely happy to finally dig this large sized variety in early 2023.

That's a nice looking button that you purchased with the border wreath design.
Do these buttons have any value actually?
Never seen any posted that I recall.

These patriotic bar buttons do have a priceless discovery value for the Rev War period relic hunters that metal detect on 18th century sites and a liquidity value for the Patriotic- Revolutionary War period collector who does not hunt- metal detect. I did learn over 35 years of metal detecting that being out in the wilderness is an unreal experience especially when you can see and feel the past that birthed our Republic while standing over a long gone colonial home site. Then I transitioned to the non-dug mint examples of what we all dig by foraging estate sales and then auction- hunter- digger. This is where you see everything you are digging in fantastic condition and more than you ever imagined that is out there in the antique world. Morph while your young but keep digging also for that is special to receive a relic buried in the ground for 200 plus years that was always meant for you to be discovered by you before you ever were born.. Good hunting-seeking-digging-foraging-antiqueing-metal detecting

Congratulations on your outstanding find! Have you ever seen this type before? They seem to have a flower in the middle.

That is a very special button. I don’t think I have ever found one. If I did, I did not recognize its significance. Congrats!

I note your two patriotic colonial bar buttons with flowers or sun rays in the center of the buttons are 12 bar and 13 stripe. I have not seen the variation you dug but like the patriotic rattlesnake buttons they come in many unique patterned designs. I'll take a patriotic button over a dug colonial coin always if I had a choice metal detecting as I have dug over 300 18th century colonial coins and only one patriotic bar button and no patriotic rattlesnake buttons. I have also dug over 300 large colonial buttons including 23 George Washington buttons and only this one ultra large patriotic bar button metal detecting starting in 1993. These buttons are exciting metal detecting discoveries from the colonial- Rev War-Federal period. Regards.
