i think it will be hard to prove when the coin was found but if i came across more than one coin i would want it to be documented for history i thought you got the money anyway for the find so why not call them in ? there is a case in the papers of some guys finding a large hoard of silver coins and have started melting them down into bars think the penalty will be high

I think if you find one gold coin, you do not have to report it and you can rightfully sell it at auction, whether valuation was £100 or £100,000.

But to be honest....i'd rather hand it in for history....don't get me wrong...only if i would have half the money, like is usually the case with museums and hoards etc.

The only history those coins would get would be in my pocket..

Funny how the government doesn't want to put in the money to acquire the coin, and they not don't want to pay you what it is worth to acquire it.

There are many US laws about detecting that tick me off, like.. no hunting on NPS land. I pay taxes on it, but I can't use it. I would even be fine with getting a permit.
