Ugly old flat nickel. Any ideas how to ID this thing?

Hello - I found this nickel about 9 inches down and it looks like someone put it down on the train tracks and squished one side of it. I think it is old based on the condition and depth and the site dates to the 1860's. Any ideas how I might be able to clean it up just enough to possibly see what kind of nickel it is? I used the V Nickel in the picture for size comparisons.

It doesn't really appear to be a nickel but more along the area of a token. That's just my opinion.

While the diameter matches a nickel, I don't think this is one. Gotta go with the token suggestion, too. Doesn't look flattened on a train track: too high on over 40% of circumference. Unless your soil is unusually acidic, doesn't look like cupro-nickel composition, either. IMO mostly copper or bronze.

Thanks for the comments. Yes the item in question is under the V nickel. I put the nickel on top to show the similar sizes. I don't think we will ever know what the object is since it is so rusted. Keep hunting y'all!
