The USS Edsall has been located about 200 miles east of Christmas Island. Interesting article that has a few stock images of the ship. But there is also a short film clip, apparently taken by a Japanese sailor which actually shows the ship going down. In addition to the film, there is an amazing image showing the ship on the bottom, 18,000' down. It's sitting perfectly upright and intact on the sea bed, and actually looks like it's on the surface, doing what it was made to do:

Found this article. The RAN ship that found Edsall was a submarine rescue ship. Hmm. Probably just on a training mission, but who knows?
