This item was dug in a field near some cellar holes. I have a feeling it may be quite rare because ive yet to find any photos or info on it. Im thinking on listing it for sale, but rather then listing it wrong, id like to find some info as to what war its from. its stamped brass, about 3inches across and 2 inches high. the cellar holes date back to the 1790s. Does anyone have any info on this item? what date or value?
thanks,
Pro-

I don't have any factual info on it but from the design and font of the letters - I would say wwI

will see if I can find anything on it (or similar) and report back if I do

cool find!

yeah, I checked a few sites for info like this one U.S.ARMY RANK AND INSIGNIA IDENTIFICATION WW1

noticed one scout badge from the phillippines, they seem to be a bit more decrative, not as simple as what I posted.
but there were different designs for different branches of service.
thanks

That is a nice find. I am sure you will find a collector of scout stuff who would like to purchase it. You could always donate it to a scout museum.

that picture of the boy scout looks fishy, Sorry, but it looks like that was added to the photo later, the buckle stands out too much and I dont see the kid even wearing a belt. If it went on the belt through the fabric I dont know, but this thin brass would not hold the strain of a tightened belt.

I can clearly see the belt in the photo. This is just an outer clip-on piece, the main body of the buckle would have been much stronger.

That is not aomething that would be worn every day. Boy scouts have things they only wear for special ceremonies and this was probably one of them. As a scout leader, the boys do still like to wear that kind of stuff to show off juat like they did years ago. Remember the boys are proud of what they have accomplished and like recognition. The boy scouts had some things like is years ago that we would now think are silly.

this site has a circa 1910 buckle, Belt Buckles from the Boy Scouts of America - ScoutStuff4Sale.com this one is not even close to the one listed. The older photo has nothing else that states hes a boy scout, no hat, no badges, no other insignias.
are we even sure the kid is a scout? ...Sorry, im still not convinced, my dad was a scout and a scout master, I was a boy scout. My dad says its military related, and hes pushing 80yrs old. He says the term U.S. was never used for scouts. He says it would say BSA or BOY SCOUT, not U.S. SCOUT

I cant say for sure what it is, only what i think it is. Boy scouts change some things a few times a year. If it was for a certain even it would only be made in limited amounts. My first thought was that it was for a military scout possibly for the civel war but possibly earlier.

Its 20th century letter fonts like someone said, no way its 1800s.

Papa Bear found a match for sure. Hopefully we will get more verification. Nice find and may have nice value.

You seem disappointed to find that its most likely a Boy Scout item. Actually its probably better to sell because World War I militaria items do not demand high prices.

If I were you, I would purchase the post card for $3 to go along with your item. I would at least write to the seller to ask questions and request a pic of the backside if it contains any writing.

I took the liberty to email the seller to ask if there is any writing on the postcard backside. Here is the reply:

Dear bigcypresshunter,

Sorry no writing just the CYKO photo paper name.

- bajababalu2

I found this:
CYKO photographic paper was introduced by Edward Anthony in 1887. The CYKO logo using hollow rather than solid letters on postcard stock appears to have been available from 1906 to 1920.
