U.S. pin/button found while prospecting (need i.d.)

I found this pin/button while gold prospecting in East TN. It was under about a foot of overburden, lying on the bedrock. It is 1 inch in diameter and slightly convex. It is heavy and appears to me made of pewter. I have search the net and have not been able to I.D. it so I don't know if it's old or not. I found a lot of old square nails in the same spot.

I did find one like it only is was bronze. It was post a WW2 Air Force lapel insignia.
 

yep standard AF Enlisted collar insignia. Brass, but can be gold plated. This is the 1948-present design.
 

Thanks to everyone for the info. I was hoping it was Civil War era, but is seems not. Back to digging now.
