I was able to get out for a few hours of detecting on a warm and sunny New England Veterans' Day. I came across the Navy button on a wooded hillside about 20 minutes into my hunt. I didn't know what it was until I was able to get it home and clean it up. The gilt on the button is lovely. The picture doesn't really do it justice. About two minutes later and five feet away I dug a 1893 Barber dime. Two more hours of hunting produced nothing but a lot of junk. Best wishes to all of the veterans on T-Net! Thanks all. I would guess that the button was lost at the same time as the dime ( given their proximity). That makes me think it dates from the late 1800's to early 1900's. If there are any button experts out there who have a different idea, please chime in.
