U.S. Navy Medallion

Does anyone have an idea how old this medallion is, or the it's origin? ?It is sterling silver (marked on back). ?No other markings are on it. ?On the front are thirteen stars.

Hi. welcome to the forum! (I'm pretty new here too and I'm addicted). If the size of that it about 1-1/4" tall than I believe its part of a "sweetheart pin" that loved ones of a soldier (or sailor in this case) wore back home while the soldier/sailor was overseas during WWII.
