U S Diplomat Button?

Found at site of Plantation home that burned in 1840 (built in 1803). Looks like some of the Diplomat buttons I have seen. Back mark is there but I cant make it out.

Re: U S Diplomat Button?

That eagle is the closest thing I have seen to it. However, looking very closely the eagle on my button has the head toward the olive branches (left talons).
When I first saw it, the details were pretty clear and my very first initial thought was GW. However, I also thought it too small as it is identical in to a quarter in size. The GW buttons I have seen appear much larger than that.
Thanks for the link though.

Definitely not a GW having a backmark. I guess I shouldn't say definitely, but I have never seen one with a makers mark. The small size isn't a deal breaker, but I think the back is. A quick look through Alberts would say if any were marked. I think a 1790s/1812 era Diplomatic button would make sense.

I think you are definitely right IP.
I dont have the Albert's book-can someone check it out and see if this is it? I found on another site referenced as OD-5 circa 1800 Diplomatic button, W & R Smith backmark. 25mm (which my button is). Here is the pic of the one referenced (wish mine came out that nice).
