Found many years ago (don't even ask when :D) in our barn in Central Ohio.

Obviously from US Calvary but not necessarily CW era.

Stitched edge folded leather approximately 12 inches long X 1-1/2 inches wide with 2~1 inch brass rosettes with wedge-shaped crimped prongs that are flattened on the backside of the leather...

Looks like the rosettes may have been gold plated at one time which may imply use by a ranking officer as opposed to trooper use.

I have a fully rigged McClellan saddle and head stall and this is not a part of either...

Orientation of rosette signifies used in the upright position as shown...

Look at this site for additional picture of rosettes: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,219741.0.htmlAny ideas?

Thanks, I don't think either suggestion applies....I called the rosettes buttons by mistake...

The rosettes have wedge-shaped prongs that are flattened on the backside of the leather...

Have seen these rosettes on various cavalry items such as blinders.

Faster than a speeding bullet...PBK, Thanks for the quick reply...

I've seen blinders also, but I suspect that what I found had a different use...

Also with the gold plating, it wouldn't be used for draft horses...

Dress or regimental or officer???

Again, thanks

That's pretty cool. I found one of those in VA when I was a kid and have it in a cigar box somewhere. If I can find it I'll post a pic.
