U.S Brass Button or ???

I was wondering if anyone knows what this is? It is about the size of a quarter. It is brass. It has US on the front & you can see that the letters are pressed in. It has 3 prongs on it that are bent over.

Looks like a rosette from a horse halter. It would have had a lead backing held in by the clips. Sometimes in the south, we would call them targets. Kinda slow them yanks down so they could enjoy a nice slow stroll through our part of the country.
