Re: Star button

I found one very similar in my Tice button book, but it didn't have a rope style border around the star. Your button very closely resembles a State of Texas Army Officer's button. I don't have my Albert's button book handy, so it may be listed there.

If you are lucky it may turn out to be a rare variant of the one I found in my book. If it is Civil War and a Texas button it is a highly collectable and valuable button.

Is there any lettering on the back? If it has a backmark it will help greatly in identifying it. Very nice little button either way. 8)

Good luck,
Steve

Re: Star button

Well, without being able to read the backmark, it looks like a Scovill or Waterbury type post war button, however the same design was used on CW era buttons. I believe without seeing the backmark that is most likely Albert's TX 36 Post CW, but if backmark is one of the southern manufactures than a TX 18.

Either way, a beautiful button, especially for a grounder.

It's not a Waterbury Pattern... I just checked all theirs and while some are close, none the same.

The button is not a repro, but the dotted rings on the back and what I think looks like a letter S, is indicative of a Scovill backmarked button from the late 1800's to early 1900s. Regardless of the possible S being there or not, just going by the dotted rings I would feel safe in saying it is most likely a Scovill b/m and the button is much later than CW.

Wouldn't the fact that there is still thread on it indicate that it isn't that old? I wonder if it could be from a re-inactment? I would still like to find one like though even if it is modern. HH Charlie

I have had thread on late victorian buttons but doesn't normaly look as fresh, so it is possible.
