Just a few observations Ive made since owning the Whites PI for two weeks. It loves bobby pins and nickles as Ive dug those two items down around 18 to 20 inches. It does give a double tone on wire, bobby pins and tin foil but I dig everything so I havent heeded its warning, not yet anyway. Im using the factory settings as they seem to work fine in wet sand and up to waist deep.
The S handle is actualy comfortable. I know alot of guys have complained and said the optional staright handle is the way to go but Im sticking with the S style.
Im getting a full 7 foot sweep with my long arms and the handle extended. I start in front of the lifeguard shacks here in Nj and head for the water dragging one toe as I go into the water. This gives me a guidline to look at back at when Im in the water and to parrallell when I come out of the water for another pass. Ive went back to a beach I did two weeks ago today and it was clean. This techinique and machine realy gets everything if you mark the sand with your toe.
Ive found 3 gold rings in the last two weeks and a bunch of cheap coins and of course trash.
My 5 inch scoop is a little small when Im in waist deep water as Ive uncovered a few things only to loose them to the current. Ive ordered a 8 inch'er.

The headphones have a problem with wind wistling over the vent holes but a little electrical tape covering the holes stops it for above water use.
The Pi quikly figures out its enviroment has changed and quietes right back down after a change like entering wetsand or the water. Its like there is a little man in the box re-tuning it for me.
The big coil does have a problem in strong current of tilting up as the current rushes against it but some extra washers and two pair of pliers solved that. I think whites needs a double nochted system and a better bolt then what they have on it now.
Ive learned to go with the flow when working the sweeping currents. I move in the direction the current wants to take the coil instead of fighting it which can tire you out.
So far Im happy with my purchase although I havent tried any other PI machines to compare it to.

Good write up and your observations on right on par with what I found with the PI Dual Field. You may want to try a coil stabilizer to eliminate the coil tilting problem. I usually make my own as they are easy to make and you can mount the coil at the perfect angle for you. Good luck with your machine, sounds like you have it figured out already.

How about a pic of the brace? I guess you use plastic? Wouldnt metal interfere with the signal?

Here's the pics. You can use about anything plastic about .125 (1/8") thick. Need a nylon screw and wingnut and a nylon cable clamp. Make sure the bottom of the stabilizer is tight againt the coil. I usually drill the hole for the coil attachment bolt and then trim (sand) the bottom edge of the stabilizer until it will just slide on. Put the cable clamp on the lower rod, adjust the coil angle and then mark and drill the hole for the nylon screw. You can drill a whole row of holes for the nylon screw to make it adjustable.

So how do you like the PI unit compared to vlf style detectors for your style of detecting?

Im a newbie and have only owned a couple of cheap detectors that would not work in wet sand and water. I did borrow the Whites vlf waterproof unit from a dealer for a week and didnt like how it falsed out when a wave hit and found pinpointing difficult. With the Pi it seems to recover and retune itself much faster then whites vlf machine and pinpointing is definatly more precise. I believe the PI also is going deeper. I have not tried all the other PI's. Maybe someone with more experience can comment.

hear hear on the two weeks thing!!! I think there mite a gold ring in your future with that detector...18to20 inches on a nickle how cool is that...
