Title pretty much says it all. I've been purchasing rings mainly for their gold content & condition to be super safe. I like to know that if a ring isn't worth what I paid in gold that I could at least resell it for more than I paid (hopefully). I rarely spend more than $30 on a ring and none that I've purchased have really been a home run yet.

I spoke to a local jeweler and learned that he'd pay about $75 for a .25 carat diamond and I know that he low balls. So I gots ta thinking.. why not take a shot at diamond rings? Well then I realized quite simply why, price. A very large price. I can only invest so much and I'd hate to take a huge risk especially on my first diamond purchase. Well, with the safety of eBay buyer protection and a stroke of [hopefully] good luck, I managed to find a pair of diamond rings in a more comfortable price range.

Now for the details.. the pair of rings were purchased for $85 total and included no details other than 14K, diamond, fine jewelry, "great condition", size 7 and two pictures. The smaller ring is white gold while the larger is yellow gold. Also, the seller supposedly "bought the rings for $450". Being as I have no ability of eyeballing a diamond and guessing it's carat weight/value, this is could be a flop. My safety net is that these pieces appear to be in good condition and should probably resell without giving me much of a loss in a worst case scenario.

Now for the speculation! (Yaaaay, fun time!) While waiting for the rings to arrive I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to what such rings could or could not sell for. Also if anyone has any shots in the dark as to what size/value the individual diamonds might hold (which I'm hoping is at least some good resale value).

My guess is that the smaller ring has little weight, probably real close to 1 gram. The larger ring I imagine is right around 1.5-2 grams. Worst case scenario I imagine could be 2.2 grams total (0.8 & 1.4 grams) for about $50 in scrap 14k. The diamonds I have no idea and I just hope they boost the value of the rings to at/over $50 a piece. What do you guys think?

Once I receive the rings I will post better pictures, weigh them, take them to a jeweler for authenticity, etc. As always your feedback is much appreciated!

I couldn't tell a diamond from a CZ myself. That's why I have a vial with a couple dozen stones in it from old scrap jewelry. One day i'll get around to finding out if they are worth anything.

Those are tiny diamonds, don't see any value there at all but I'm not a diamond expert. I wish diamonds of that size had value because I got a pile of 35 of them that are between .10 ct & .05ct. that Id love to sell. I'm pretty sure those in the rings you have are at most .10ct or maybe less.

I send all my diamonds to the Rick shatz company. They buy everything but specialize in diamond mêlée - the real little ones. Average about 100 a carat on the teeny ones.

Good to know, thank you for that INFO! BTW what is teeny in your book, like .01, .02 or .03?

Interested in hearing more about your experience with Shatz. Ever sold anything besides melee? Do you have to be a licensed business to sell to them? I come into nicer estate pieces every so often & would love to have a reliable buyer.

Sure thing. For teeny I'm thinking anything around 5 points. I have sent Shatz larger stones am happy with the prices. Around what you get on ebay but without the 10% vig to ebay and 2% to paypsl. Anyone can send them in.

So assuming the diamonds don't amount to much value alone, what do you think the pieces as a whole would go for as jewelry? Do you think I would come out ahead with a detailed description and photographs? Or would I be lucky to break even? Splitting what I paid in between the two it's $42.50 per ring.

I would ask a min of $75 each. Pricing is a funny thing. With the exception of known entities (e.g. a specific brand and model of radio or graded coin) that are frequently exchanged in the marketplace, price is very abstract. Most consumers equate price with quality.

75 each I can certainly live with. It's not a home run, but I'll take it any day of the week! If nothing else is special about then I suppose I will list the smaller one at 80-100 and try 120-150 for the larger. If I can make my money back on just one that'd be awesome!

Not sure when they will arrive as the seller is shipping from Canada and there is no tracking. Unlikely they'd get here today, but I'll be sure to post better description when they arrive!
