There is a military tradition that when a newly commissioned Second Lieutenant (2Lt) receives his/her first salute from an enlisted person, then the 2Lt presents the person with a silver dollar. Nowadays, when a 2Lt is commissioned as part of a ceremony, the lieutenant can invite any enlisted person, active or retired, to give the First Salute. This past week, I was invited to give the First Salute to two of my former Air Force Junior ROTC cadets (I was their instructor on the high school level). With a little assistance from me, these young ladies went on to receive Senior ROTC scholarships (college level) and were, after four years, being commissioned as 2Lts in the Air Force. Needless to say I was extremely proud of their accomplishments and know they will be highly successful, serving their country in the United States Air Force. The silver dollars they gave me upon receiving their First Salute are nice, but the satisfaction I received was priceless, knowing they thought enough of me as a motivating force to invite me to be a part of such an important event in their lives. Needless to say, those two silver dollars will always stay in my coin collection. One commissioning ceremony was at the University of Southern Mississippi. The other ceremony followed the next day at Mississippi State University. That's me in the suit. I still have my Air Force uniform but decided not to wear it as I was afraid my military bearing and appearance had deteriorated. Plus, I didn't want to shave my goatee! Thanks for visiting and happy hunting!
