Hi everyone, and Happy New Year!

Today I found two different items and I think they're both parts of buckles, but i'm looking for confirmation and some more information please (such as estimated age):

1. The first is obvious: it's a buckle, but looks silver plated, which I'm not used to finding. I'm more used to finding brass ones like this. Would the silver plating imply that it's not as old as the brass ones?

2. The second is a new type of item for me, but from my research I believe it's a half of a two-piece buckle. The circle is plain; no design. It does seem small compared to other examples I've seen online. Can anyone offer more information on this sort of item, and an estimate of age? (Note the design on the straight part nearest the circle - it looks like wrapped rope to me, which is a cool little touch).

My son got out with me today and helped me find both of these items, which made it a great day. We also found about a dozen wheat pennies (and a few more modern pennies) but suprisingly no silver and no dimes, quarters or nickels. Just pennies. Weird.

Thanks for looking!

Brian

Hi Brian!

Hard to pin an exact age on your first buckle as these types of buckles haven't changed much in 100 years. Prob from early 1900s and the buyer or the horse tack paid a bit extra to get some fancy (my guess nickel-plated) buckles for his horse.

Your second item (part of a two piece buckle) is older--my guess ca 1850 or a bit earlier. Very interesting buckle in that diminutive size. Looking forward to what some of the experts have to say on it. Very nice find, brother!

Happy New Year to you as well. :occasion14:

Nice finds and Happy New Year!
Can't wait to hear more about the second belt...
