I got back to the folks house today. The same house where I found the 1899 Barber half dollar last week. Searched for a while in the same side lawn where the half turned up. I dug a bit of junk at first before I came across a choppy signal that wasn't very consistent on the VDI display on my Vx3. It was jumping around in the 40's and 50's. I decided to dig and eventually popped what appeared to be a coin out of the side of the hole at about 4 1/2 inches. It turned out to be a button almost exactly the size of an indian head cent. It says CLEVELAND on it with a shield in the center. The shield appears to have 8 stars in it. . It's a one piece button that's missing the shank and does not appear to have any writing on the reverse. Here's a pic of what I saw.....followed by a couple cleaner pics...

The only other find of the day was another one piece button that I pulled out from about 6 inches deep. It was a pretty good signal so I was thinking maybe it was a coin when I saw it in the hole. It turned out to be a one piece button with a design that has a DOUBLE GILT back mark.

Any specific info on either button would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and happy hunting.

Very cool buttons!
Thank you tngirl. Can anyone with a button book tell me if the Cleveland button has anything to do with Grover Cleveland's presidency/campaign/inauguration? The depth of this find was the same as several other items found at the same site that date from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Found an 1899 barber half dollar about 25 feet from it. He was the 22nd and 24th president. 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. I'm sure this is just wishful thinking on my part but my curiosity is piqued for the moment. I also posted it in the what is it forum but figured it might get a few more views here.
