Two days ago I posted a spear/knife surface find from the Casper, WY area (about 15 miles east). You all give me GREAT info and I have really had fun researching both material and point type. Thank you. My main question this time around is how does one know how old an artifact is? Here are two more points from the same area, also surface finds, found at the same time as the spear/knife. Would they be the same age as the spear? When I shared the info on the age of the spear/knife, the person I was hunting with scoffed at it, not believing it would be all that old. Obviously he is wrong and talking nonsense :icon_scratch:, but that got me to thinking, how do we know the approximate age of these treasures? Thanks for the education! ( I have also attached the spear photo again, just so not one has to go back to find it.) dan's artifact.jpg Dan artifact 7.jpg

Looks like your having fun finding some good points? The first one in the second photo looks like a Pelican Lake point, and your other one looks like a northern plains side notch.

Holy #$%! Nice finds. The points are generally type when they're found in dateable context, meaning they're in their original location and associated artifacts can be carbon dated, geologically dated or some other means. Then, when similar style points are found out of context they can be reasonably dated based on that information. Those are GREAT finds. Welcome to the site.

Thanks all - I have already been having a blast with the suggested sites - so much cool info and actually pretty easy to navigate even for a non-expert like me! I have learned a lot just tonight - thank you to all! (and I have emailed some of it to my doubting friend, so hopefully it will show him the facts)

That would be a blast finding those I've been looking for years haven't found one. Great job my friend. Tommy
