I'm thinking some part of horse tack or maybe belt buckle. Either way it's great.

Too bad you couldn't rename you post, cause if you could have called this a snake buckle from the start....There would have been lots of posts on this one,.

I've done it before. I think it may help in getting a more accurate identification of your particular version of this buckle, as there were many types with slight variations. Yours with the center medallion doesn't appear too often. Someone from across the pond may be able to nail down a date for it. Maybe, maybe not. If it was found down here in the southern US, it would automatically be considered a "confederate" buckle, even though that may not be historically factual 100%.
