The wife and I went creekwalking today and found these!! The first good finds in the past few outings. I still need to post one that the wife found and another I found from a few weeks ago...but check these out. The grey one I believe was reworked at some point and the other I am not sure if it is broken at the base and ground as I see some people ask about or just broke. Any ideas?? Enjoy!!

I'm pretty sure only dealers believe the snapped-base theory. It's still a killer find that's worthy of being framed.

No its a snapped base and made that way. We find many high quality crafted items with snaped bases. I beleive it was another method in creating a tool or point. I always thought they were broke as well but they make sense with a snapped base providing strength at the base. MHO influenced by those smarter than I.
Nice finds. What area..?
Its also common to find sites where snapped stems are the norm.

Sorry TN, but I have to disagree with you on that. I know a lot of people say the same thing you just said, but why go to all the trouble of putting a base on something just to snap it off. Now, I agree they may have still been used after the bases were broken off, but I will never be convinced that it was an intentional thing that they meant to do. It just doesn't seem feasible to me.

This topic has been hotly debated for years and probably always will be and we can thank Overtsreet for that because they were the first ones to list a "snapped base" point.

what great finds---what great photos----what great debate-----I would be jumping out of my skin if I found anything nearly as fabulous as these...where,again are you finding these---creek beds---what state....details....

I am in the Kansas City, Missouri area. Got these in a creek. I hunt almost entirely creeks and rivers. Good Luck!

You may be right. I have been wrong before. My humble theory is that the point was still attached to the stone and completed and then snapped off. It gave them more material when working the point/knife. I have found some beautiful workmanship on them with the snap seeming to be done at time of Manufacture. These are the only ones that were not in frames I could find.
Snapped and not broken is the theory here among hunters/collectors and Archy's .Have many broke base points. In a rush why grind or shape a base as it did not make any difference to the use. Snapped base could and would have been efficient in many cases.
You are right we may never know and Overstreet probably saw enough example as we do to classify and name them. Thank you for disagreeing though. It opens the thought process. :read2:

So interesting, I'm always learning. Can someone discuss "ground" bases? And maybe show a picture? Those are great points shaf, and thanks for the great pictures of the base, I've been confused about the "ground" part, had no idea about the snapped debate. Thanks for showing.
