I just returned from two full days of CW relic hunting in Va. I have the opportunity to get on this spot three or four times per year and it hasn't let me down yet. This trip produced over 100 bullets(found 73 the first day) and several shell fragments. My favorite find was the top of a Schenkl fuse with the Oct. 16, 1861 patent date on it.
I've really just been an observer on this site for a while and have very much enjoyed seeing the unbelievable finds that are being made. If I find cool stuff in the future, I'll post it.

73 bullets in a day?! Pretty tough to beat that! Nice pile of iron, too! What's the first pic? Cannister??

That's a pile of lead! Nice digs

;) Luv those sites that seldom let you down . The lead was sure flying . Great hunt !

dawg :skullflag:

These were the small marble-size shot, sound a lot like nails.

Are they iron? If so, pretty scarce grape shot out of confederate cannonballs, if I'm not mistaken.

They are iron and they are scattered along with ball fragments on this particular spot. Last year, a few hundred yards from this spot, there was an impact area that had small cut lead everywhere....I think the Confederates stuffed whatever they could in those side-loader balls.
Thanks for letting me know that they might be scarce, I'm learning as I go.

What a great hunt! The Schenkl shell with the date intact is a great piece and I'll bet it was fun digging all that lead.

Thanks CoilyGirl, it's the best CW spot that I have....I've probably dug 800-900 bullets and some other great items. Still looking for that elusive CSA buckle...every time you post, I pause to look at yours.
