Hey TNet. I haven't been on here in a while and I haven't been metal detecting much either. I was going through a divorce and getting settled into my new life. One of the "benefits" is that I now live in an older home in the older neighborhood of my town. I have detected the yard a few short times and haven't found anything old or deep. My detector and pinpointer have been giving me fits with weird behavior.

Anyways, I had the day off from work today and didn't have anything else to do so I went out in the yard to search some more. Today I decided to be less picky on digging targets, thinking maybe I could get to the deep stuff if I dug up everything shallow first. I got to a spot in the front yard and got a weird signal but it was solid so I dug it. As soon as I popped the flap I saw two coins in the hole. I picked up the first coin and saw an Indian head - my first buffalo nickel! Next to it was another nickel bit it looked different than digging a modern nickel. I looked at the back and discovered it was a war nickel - also my first! They were less than 3" down. I scanned the area around the hole very slowly and got another solid signal about 5ft away. It was another war nickel, also about 3" down!

These were the only coins I found today but it was an awesome day for me! I was getting a little discouraged with metal detecting and my luck in general but the coins I found today have recharged me! Now it's time to find some more silver in this yard! Good luck everyone with your hunting!

Keep chasing those low signals - many people skip over them and miss out. I hope you have many sunny days ahead.

Congrats on your 2 for 1!!! :icon_thumright: Glad you're recharged for MDing as it takes your mind off of everything except the hunt.

Congratualtions on the two firsts! :occasion14:

First off, divorce sucks. Been through one and still having residual effects but, we go forward. Glad to see you got back into the swing and landing a double whammy on the chin of your bucket list! Great to score keepers from your own turf. Love my Buffalo's & Silver nickels. Great little hunt. Keep after it and your chin up mate.:icon_thumleft:

Nice finds. If you are having problems with your detector around a old house, and if you're going to clear out shallower targets, you might start with turning your sensitivity down. Be surprised at the difference it will make, and it can even help with some a little bit deeper targets. May not be the problem you're having, but worth a shot.

Those 'War Nickles ' look to be in great condition. Maybe lost the year they were minted .
The Buff , is Great to, I have only dug 2 in a long time detecting.

That'll keep you motivated for quite a while. Your luck has changed for the better! Congrats!

Sorry to hear about your divorce. Glad your starting to rebuild, and congrats on your "Nickel first finds". I never turn down those lower sounding hits, as I believe Nickels are coins also !! They may not be silver, but for me its not just about the silver.

Like'n the elusive nickels! Super nice !!

A nickel a day keeps the doctor away. You should be good for months.

congrats on the sweet finds, the buff looks great too. hope it gets better for you

Thanks for the kind wishes everyone! These coins definitely made my day. I'm pretty sure I nicked the face of the war nickel on the right but it's still a pretty coin to me!

David680 - Thanks for the tip about the sensitivity. I'll be sure to try that more especially in the areas with more signals.

I have never tried lowering the sensitivity on my machines around old house foundations. They tend to be littered with roofing nails making it nearly impossible to lock onto targets sometimes. I will also try lowering my sens around the foundation.:icon_thumleft:

At Pro works well if you go over the nail then notch em out !!!!!
