Hey TNet. I haven't been on here in a while and I haven't been metal detecting much either. I was going through a divorce and getting settled into my new life. One of the "benefits" is that I now live in an older home in the older neighborhood of my town. I have detected the yard a few short times and haven't found anything old or deep. My detector and pinpointer have been giving me fits with weird behavior.
Anyways, I had the day off from work today and didn't have anything else to do so I went out in the yard to search some more. Today I decided to be less picky on digging targets, thinking maybe I could get to the deep stuff if I dug up everything shallow first. I got to a spot in the front yard and got a weird signal but it was solid so I dug it. As soon as I popped the flap I saw two coins in the hole. I picked up the first coin and saw an Indian head - my first buffalo nickel! Next to it was another nickel bit it looked different than digging a modern nickel. I looked at the back and discovered it was a war nickel - also my first! They were less than 3" down. I scanned the area around the hole very slowly and got another solid signal about 5ft away. It was another war nickel, also about 3" down!
These were the only coins I found today but it was an awesome day for me! I was getting a little discouraged with metal detecting and my luck in general but the coins I found today have recharged me! Now it's time to find some more silver in this yard! Good luck everyone with your hunting!
