Two finds from civil war battlefield

Hey all,

Found these while metal detecting a small civil war battlefield.

This looks like the fuse section of a cannon ball or artillery shell.











This looks like the hammer from an old gun hammer.








Any ideas?

It appears to me that you have a piece of exploded ordinance. No idea on the other piece...d2

Took cannon ball to civil war museum...they think it is a piece of a 12 pounder. an expert will look at it Thursday. They think the other pieces is a gun hammer but not sure. Same expert will look at it. Elsewhere it was suggested to be a a hammere a shotgun.

Your cannon ball piece looks like a fragment from a Borman. The other piece looks like a broken piece of wrought iron gate or fence to me.

IMO, it is too heavy and too crude to be a gun part. Maybe a piece of an iron daybed or fence post topper as suggested by Dharmacy. Let us know what they say.

I could see that. The circle in the middle is what eats me though, plus it was found in a field that has never had a house, iron fence, or or any other structures on it before the 1970s. But things do have a tendency of showing up in unexpected places
