A buddy of mine gave these to me today along with an apple pie and said Happy Thanksgiving!!

I've never seen a domed eagle button quite like this, with a solder smudge on the back. A little help with date and ID would appreciated. I do see Excelsior under the eagle. In the one picture of the back, by the loop, I can see the reverse of the shield though the hole. Any help on the date would be appreciated. =ED

I believe those are fashion buttons, from looking at the back. They were made to imitate the officers button, which was a high domed, well made button. I can only guess at the date but I would say 1920s to 30s.

The neat part is he found them on top of his book case in a paper folder . He already was making the yearly batch of apple pies, and thought to give these to me as well. I would like to mount these in a frame for him and give them back with a little history . =ED

If you do a search for New York Militia Staff buttons and click on images you will find several buttons like yours. Most are referred to as post war. However, I am still suspect of the attachment loop. I hope someone can shed more light on the subject and tell us that these are correct.
One thing I forgot to mention is the shield. There are three variations according to "Albert's" button book. All three have a different number of bars in the shield, 4,5,or 6.

They are New York National Guard officer's buttons. Yours have what is called a "self-shank" back... meaning, the back itself forms the shank/loop for sewing the button onto cloth, instead of having a separately-made loop or shank. If I recall correctly, that type of self-shank back was invented and patented a few years after 1900.

Also, your buttons appear to have what is called "false 3-piece construction... meaning, they are a 2-piece button manufactured cheaply to resemble a more-expensive 3-piece construction. That indicates they were not made for actual Military service. Yours may have been made for veterans' use, or as Fashion buttons.
