These two buttons were found yesterday within ten feet of one another in a Baltimore city park that has a 19th century history of military use. One is a snap closure; the obverse has a crosshatch pattern. The other is an eagle button that I believe is Federal. The heavy encrustation on both sides persists more on the obverse but enough is removed to reveal a shield overlying the eagle; I think this is a match to a Scovill.650 coat button, a general Federal service button ca. 1850 (see Albert GI94 and Tice GEN215A30). It measures between 19 and 20 mm in diameter.

I appreciate input on either of these and am interested if they may be of the same vintage.

I can't make out the Exact backmark on the eagle button, but it is by Scovill, as you were eluding to... Made in Waterbury, but not by the Waterbury Button co. like the other button. It seems like it would be like: http://powhatanstation.com/uploads/IMG_6390.JPG
