Can anyone identify the caliber of these bullets. They were found on the beach at Mrytle Beach SC about 12 inches apart and 10 inches deep. You can see the rifling on the bullets and the back end of both bullets look as if it may have been a tracer round. Each bullet is 2.325 inches long and 0.510 diameter at the largest spot. How they got there who knows? I sure don't. Many people have hunted the area before. Found on 12-29-07 and yes I am a newbie so I hope this post works out. I only included one pic due to size of file.

Remtime,

This appears to be a .50 caliber-ball, M2 FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullet. There should be a color on the tip indicating if it is incendiary, tracer, or armour percing. There are several websites which have the info on this bullet. Go to Olive-Drab.com and search for 50 caliber ammunition, it will give you the specs on it, ie: fired from a M-2 Machine Gun with a velocity of 3050 FPS (Foot Per Second).

I work with EOD people, so please read a warming I left under "Anyone know?" by sthrngold07 posted today.

Keep on MDing.

Thanks for the info fellow MD. We have a place at pirates land and would be glad to give you a call sometime. However I am still new to this site and forgive me but I don't exactly know what a PM is.

Up above Myrtle near the old Arrowhead area(where the Hilton is now) Was a straffing area where they practiced. When I first started detecting there in the early 70s we could find a bucket full of 50cal bullets and brass. Tony

you still can not by the bucket full but quite a few all the way down to past the state park heading south

they sure did like to shoot those 50 cals

.50 caliber is .50 inches in diameter. So with your measurement, you've pretty much got what people say. Tracer round? If so, I think it would have a place on the bottom for the tracer material which would be ignited when fired. The color will tell you that as well if it is still there.
