I like the motif on the knife. If you found it in a CW area, I'd presume it to be period. But I'm not a knife expert.

WOW! That is a beautiful pocket knife. Do the blades open on opposite ends or do they open in the same direction? Just curious if it is a penknife or a standard pocket knife.

Last fall there was a similar knife found by a TNetter. Can't recall who it was, but that person also found a knife with that same type of design and composition. Looks old, but I have no idea how old. Been looking through my knife books and doing online searches to no avail. Bummer!

Congrats to your friend for digging up a great piece of history - and a very nice knife!!

I'm with TT on this find... it's wonderful and has tons of charactor!

I helped someone research a pocket knife a while back and found out that if you have no exact picture and/or no name (I am presumming you cannot find a name on it) that you will never know who made it or how old it is.

However, I think you can presume, and righfully so, that if it was with CW era stuff, same locations and same depths, that it prolly was a CW soldiers knife. Or at least lost within a few years pre or post CW.

That's a very nice old pocket knife! If there's any way to open the blades, the maker may be marked on the base of the larger blade... could help with dating it. It's a really nice looking knife, and I'll bet it has some value despite its condition. ...but then, it would be nice to add to a display too!

When you find out let me know mines a keen kutter but have found no one with any knowlege that can help, Im guessing its a pewter handle. Truly a cool old knife

Thanks for notiecing Treasuretales. I am glad to find this post, and I hope we can get some answers, mine is a keen kutter but the other word is evasive Keen kutters were very close to civil war but the actual 1st manfactur date is elusive, least thats what my reaserch has lead to. A dated blade (which mine had none) is key from what I am told. Restoration of course was also discuraged.Price was not even considered due to condition (my luck I've got the only one and no one else wants it) even though I was intrested. I hope that helps.
