Re: Two Big 8's.

Wow nice finds......cant believe they are in such good condition.....howd u get em?

Re: Two Big 8's.

The 1798 was found in November of 2006 in a private yard about 3 inches down. The 1774 was found a couple weeks ago in a pasture about 4 inches down. Both recovered while metal detecting.

Re: Two Big 8's.

awesome finds I would love to find some Reales

Re: Two Big 8's.

And as everybody here knows, these 8R's were valued and used as a United States dollar previous to the coinage act of February 1857. That was a lot of money to lose back then! The wealthy investors
of the time bought large tracts of Western land for pennies/acre. You are certainly lucky, and I know
the hard work it takes to make great finds like these. 3 Cheers for the 8's !

Re: Two Big 8's.

Romeo...Congrats on both. finding one is fantastic, but two is absolutely great!!! One of them is definitely on my wish list to find!!

Re: Two Big 8's.

The most obvious question is what part of the country are you in? Your coin and the MTT are at the top of every list! Good job!

Re: Two Big 8's.

Now thats what im talking about!

Very nice, especially the 1798! What did you use to clean them, & still conserve the tone on the 1798.

Actually the only thing I did to clean them was to run some water over them and a light brushing with a soft bristle toothbrush. This is how they looked coming out of the ground!! Thanks for the comments!

Re: Two Big 8's.

Romeo they are fantastic. I just want to sit and look at them. I can't imagine what it was like to hold such old coins.

Not only have you had the pleasure twice, but both recovered examples have excellent detail.

I do not recall every detail of the original circumstances...

just how exactly did you go about selling your soul to the Devil?

The deal with the devil will need to be made for number 3 I think...just dumb luck on 1 and 2.

For your reading pleasure...
