Hi everyone. I was exploring an old cellar hole today (the homesite is on an 1853 map of my area) and came across a long section of this twisted iron. The section was maybe 8 feet long. These three little pieces broke off so I brought them home, and left the rest at the site.

Can anyone tell me what this might have been for? And how old it would be?

I searched "twisted iron fence wire" because that was my best guess as to what it was, but I didn't see any images like this.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help.

Hi everyone. I returned to the cellar hole site and took a walk around the larger area, and I've solved the mystery of what this twisted wire was for.
DCMatt got it correct: it is clearly ribbon wire for fencing. Take a look at how the trees have grown around that wire! (I hope the pictures do it justice. In at least one picture you can see three different wires at three different heights. Must have been to hold in...sheep? Or similar sized livestock.)

Thanks DCMatt!

PS - I didn't find too much in an hour of detecting, but toward the end I may have narrowed in on an area of household activity (or a dump) because I found a can lid and watering can lid.
Hopefully I'll be posting about finding coins or buttons or something soon.
