Brad, you might have something there.Could you post a photo of your turtle rock?I've seen turtle paper weights and smaller stone turtles on this or similar forums in the past.Yours is much larger.Maybe is a petrified turtle or an ancient sculpture?

Thanks for the interest, having trouble loading a pic "file to large" even for one pic. Have them in my yahoo photos if anyone wants an invite to view them that way. I need to clarify myself, the reason for calling it a turtle rock is that it is shaped like a soft shell turtle, minus the head and legs.

Thanks Diamond Jim for the input. It's definitely not limestone, it rings like a steel sewer lid when I tapped it with a piece of granite. It just threw me for a loop, didn't come from a river but a small stream on the farm. No other flint around the area, just some granite left by the glaciers. Thanks again.

It is hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like chalcedony. I don't know where you live, so it is hard to say for sure. The outside edge, where the light isn't so bright, has the classic look of silicate material like agate (waxy, translucent, bubbly). fossilized coral can that has been through the tumbling of a glacier can also look like your rock. The reason I mention it is because it appears as though their may be a bit of fossilized coral showing on the top of the rock below the 5, but I'm not sure.

In that case, I'll go with a chalcedony filled geode. I would bet that a very small cavity still exists in the center, and that would produce the sound you describe. I would love to have the opportunity to walk the area next time I am in the area. I was thinking about going to Keokuk, IA during the Fourth of July Week for geodes.

I appreciate all of your help, but the land is private and it has taken me several years to get permission myself. The owner probably won't go for it but will check when I go back turkey hunting in April. Thanks again.
