Greetings, a couple of friends found a rarely seen cave in SE Arizona. In it were these beads. Two on the surface, the rest slightly buried. Believe it or not the beads were rebuired. They would love to have kept them but after much deliberation decided to leave them.

But it leads to some questions.
How can it be determined if the drill holes are modern or ancient? I am far from an expert and I know there are several knowledgeable people on this site so any help is greatly appreciated.

Another question, can the turquoise be identified as to its probable origin? I know some can identify “Bisbee Blue” for example. I don’t know one from another so I am seeking help with that.

Finally how would the holes be made?
Thank you for any help. CF

Great to hear they were left with the rightful owners.
Tons of info about "the stone" on the web, origins, the color, how it was drilled, how it was used spiritually, plenty to be investigated...knowledge about it is wonderful, especially the way it was offered back to the ancestors.

The ones at 6&7:00 look like a different color than the others, different origins, proxcemity of mines to area found is good clue for origins, however it was traded thru a wide network.

I thought I posted an explanation of how they were drilled, since you asked. But it disappeared (?)

Drilled using a thin reed (or similar) with a grain of sand as the cutting bit.

yes the beads can be matched to their origin, but not by us.
