Was back in western Illinois for Thanksgiving. Look around my brother's yard for about 30 minutes. Found some clad but did find a nice silver ring.

On Friday I hit the old one room school house site I had been too 3 previous times this fall. Found 4 wheaties (1910, 1910D, 1920 and a 1933- most recent coin from this site) I have found 4 IHs and about 12 wheaties at this site but no silver.

Makes sense that these turn of the century farm kids probably didn't have pockets full of silver but I am not giving up yet. I did find one mercury dime at this site but it was in front of the cemetary that borders the school.

The amazing thing is that there is 3 or 4 100 year old large oak trees around the school. They must have been loaded with squirrels or racoons because I have found nearly 40 shotgun shell brass casings from old paper shot gun shells within 20 to 30 yards of the trees. Frustrating part is that many times when you see them in the dirt from the bottom they look like a coin.

Not sure if I will make it back before the ground is permanently frozen or covered with snow but will be hitting it again next year along with about 10 more school house sites I have located on old maps. When I am back at Christmas I will try and secure permission.

Great old coins!!! LOL about all of the shotgun shells around the trees... :tongue3: I found my first 10ga shell yesterday, usuially I find lots of 12ga shells but they are just scattered through out the woods. Keep on hittin that place, it has to have more!!! :icon_pirat:

Sounds like some good hunting Pocket Spill! Congrats on your ring. How about some pics?

Pocket Spill,

I know what you mean about the shotgun shells. The ring up just like nickels on my machine and then sometimes when they're dug all I can make out at first is the rounded end. I have to believe in those shotgun shells, because whenever I find them where they shouldn't belong (i.e. forest preserves) at 5 or 6 inches deep, I know there has been activity there a long time ago and old silver shouldn't be too far.

Nice finds

Those wheaties sure beat the hell out of memorials, and it's just a matter of time before the silver pops up.

I know exactly what you mean about the shells too. After what seemed like hours of digging foil and big old aluminum bottle caps, I got a nice repeatable signal that I knew had to be a coin. I dug and pulled a 6" plug
and scanned the plug. Nothing, so I pulled some dirt out of the hole and saw a nice nickel sized disk starting back up with me. I thought yes, it's about time. Reached down into the hole and plucked a brass shotgun shell.

Good luck on your next visit to that site!
Mike
