Tumacacori de los sierritas? (mission?)

I was reading Samuel Jacksons 200 trails to treasure and it mentioned that the deoterro relating to the tumacacori treasure is actually based on another mission site north of the present day site - this site is called tumacacori de los sierritas. Anyone heard of this? Tried doing some research and found nothing and old maps of the area never mentioned or show this site (which does not mean a whole lot). I remember several years ago I took a tour of the Tumacacori mission and they had a map of all the missions and visitas in southern AZ. It showed small churches that most maps do not show. It was not too long after this that the map was pulled and a more "generalized" map put in its place. To this date the park has refused to acknowledge that they ever displayed such a map. Years ago I read some thing about tumacacori two missions the frist one was built at a diffrent location about two to three miles furter north I think not real sure .will try to locate the article on that buck

1st Tumacacori

I doubt that you will find much, if anything, on the location of the First Tumacacori Mission.
It was abandon during the Indian Revolt of 1680!
The second, the present mission, was build later by the "Franciscans" and this mission, was used by them, to convert the indians!
Not! To do anymore mining!
:roll: The 1st Mission was built by the "Jesuits", in the mnts, that are to the west of the present day mission.
And used as the main hqds for their (The Jesuits) mining operations in these mnts!
The "Key" to finding this mission is to find the location of the "Virgin of Guadalupe Mine"!
As this mine is south of the 1st Mission!
Sounds dumb?
Because if you knew where the "Mine" was/is, you'd have no need to find the "Mission" ?
:? Wrong!
The "mission" is the "Key" to finding more of the eight or so mines/caches associated with the 1st (original) Mission!

If you get a chance there is a book titled "Adventures in Arizona and & New Mexico" by Samuel Woodworth Cozzens. Firsthand accounts circa 1858 or so of some interesting things the writer saw. Even if no great revelations at least descriptions.

aerial photos

There may be a way to locate the other mission. i have used terraserver to look at the areial photos of an area to trace old trails. I see that the highway goes next to the river and the second mission is there. There is always a chance that the later monks that took over may have built the second church over the old to save time and erase any memory of the first. The aerial photos can be used to maybe find the sunken or depressed geological formation of the first church. Looking at the old maps all the missions or always next to water. So if that is the case, the first must be near the river. Ether north or south or across the river on the east side from the second. There is a chance that one of the trails from the rebuilt church may lead to where the first mission was. The aerial photos show the trails around the second mission some are faint but tracable. I was able to follow the trails into the mountains. One of those trails must lead to where maybe the mines or located. The photos should show where the furnace or rock-houses were, where they crushed the ore or hid it. The big help here is the fact that this is a vary arid region. don't forget they had to have a water source for the mines. boomer

Other missions

Hey BOOMER:
:shock: I have come across three missions in this area/mnts. myself!
One of them, and I, actually measured this, is 55' x 74' !
The walls about 3' thick!
It has two entrances!
The one on the westside, is just a regular open doorway.
The door, of course, long, long since gone!
As is the roof!
The other entrance, on the Northside, has a parapet/rampart , 4- 4 1/2 feet high, in front of the doorway!!
Used for defense?
:?: If so, how come the westside entrance doesn't have a rampart ?
But! What is really strange, is that inside of the mission, next to a small room, along east wall, is what looks to be a dug water well?
NOW! Remember this is on the INSIDEof the mission!
It is circular, lined with stones, once had a raised wall around it?
It was/is now filled up with rock/boulders!
It is not, as some peolpe might think, a fire pit/place!
I intend to go back soon and dig into it!
Maybe, instead of being a "well", it is the opening to a cellar/underground store room ! ?
The only way to know for sure is to dig into it and have a :shock: look!
I SURE WISHED I HAD A PARTNER OR TWO to give me a hand with all of this "digging"!
And crawling around in these mines!
Seems that most or all of the present TH'ers are working 8-5, 5 days a week and only have the weekends to "TH" !
Atleast, all of them that I have run into !
I have a couple of photos of this mission that, if I can "dig" them up, I'll send to you!
There are eight and I am sure more, that I have seen, Spanish Mines in this canyon!
Two of these have the entrances covered/concealed.
I do have a photo of me, sampling one of them!

cptbil, i think the one way to solve the story or myth is by using aerial photos. but it will be a long slow undertaking, following each trail and keeping records. being here in the east, its hard to say something of a desert region when you have no training in that type of area. i can only go by what i have used on terraserver for my location. boomer
