beautiful evening yesterday so off we went…. They have started the harvest.. yay.. this means we will soon be able to take our Deus to the fields we did last year with our old kit to see what other treasure we missed! 😆 xx

in the meantime this field keeps on giving…. We first came here 2nd July, so that’s nearly a whole month it has given us! Pretty amazing! xx we have a couple of weights, one not so pretty! A huge pot mend, mystery item, squashed thimble and small piece of plate,(?) you can see a lip on the edge, 2 bits of lead with holes in … one looks a bit like a fish (?) …. Then we found some bronze casting bits, a tack stud and button, with visible half ridge, more buttons, 2 crusty romans, still to be cleaned, and Sunday’s cleaned, can make out the heads, but no I’d. But Thort I’d add to show I do clean them! 😆 xx

Obligatory pics of the views and flowers, because so pretty in the evening light! xx

Great to see the weather was on your side last evening and the crops are being harvested now.
Well done on the couple of bronzes again, and the looking forward to the ID of them.
What type of plant/flower is that?

Tremendous!

Can you drop a shovel in that field without hitting a coin? L.o.l... (Yes it takes hours and hours each on average , but wow!)

Nails were of course hand forged until machine cut. With early machine cut ones square/rectangular as well.
Binging us to your pierced lead piece that might have been nailed.
Lead discs (coin shaped) were used to nail through to hold roofing material here long ago.
An attempt to keep water from tracking along the fasteners.
Leads malleability and ease of working created lots of sealing type uses. And a nail would make it stick! For a while anyways...

As ever lead had value. Toxicity wasn't a common known concern about it like today.
Up to around 30%lead in old pewter recipes. Bullets for guns. Patch/repair material for non load conditions. Hem weights. Curtain weights , but non glassed windows with only fabric or oilcloth could benefit from a weighted bottom edge.
Doors too could be replaced (before construction) with canvas or the most common type durable (nonedible) covering. Partitions as well. Stout wind means stirred up dust and flopping material. Weight it and reduce the activity. Besides making it hang consistently.
What does bits of lead in a seam need to look like? A seam is all.
And come winter with no glass shall we secure another light colored cover or an additional wooden one besides the shutter over the lone window? Hand me those pre punched lead pieces and nails. ... And there goes the first one into the snow. Leave it and keep your hands dry. We'll get it in spring when we pull the cover. Hold these cloth strips for the edges. This one right along here. Watch your fingers!
