Detector(s) used
Garrett Ace 350 with 8.5"x 11" DD coil & Vulcan 360 pin pointer
along with good 'ol eyeballs
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I have a new place I just started detecting... there used to be a house and farm...
and it's a public yet very quiet unpopular place (right now anyways).
I started getting all kinds of good beeps... just started to dig... then dogs go off...
here comes a man walking his dog.
He decides he needs to stop and talk... AND TALK... AND TALK...
A million questions... and I couldnt hear anything because the dogs are still making a lot of racket!
I told him the dogs are friendly, they just wanted to meet the other dog.
A million more questions.... STILL cant hear over the dogs barking!
LOL I tried to be polite, and still detect. Wasnt happening. Sigh...
I knew something had to go wrong! (I wanted to be alone) :BangHead:
He laughed at astonishment when I dug up a small peice of foil. A million more questions... then started telling me all about him in Austin... (yawn)
My pinpointer was acting weird, shutting itself off when it came into contact with metal...
HMMM
I was hoping he'd get the hint it's time to go... but, NO, he didnt.
I decided to say... "well, it's time for the dogs to get some water".
Luckily, he didnt follow me and dogs to the lake shore.
I bet there was a lot of good stuff there... cant wait to go back.
New pin pointer is on the way, and maybe I'll be lucky enough
to hit that area again WITHOUT company! Over anxious here...:laughing9:

It's often hard for others to get the message that you're busy and don't really want to get into a longer session, especially kids that follow you in a park. I'm glad however, that you remained friendly and civil as our demeanor reflects on the hobby for all of us.

I cant be rude... it's just not me. Unless provoked in some terrible way... I have a very long fuse before I get mad.
I could see he was interested in what I was doing, and possibly lonely too...

Never fails to amaze me how you can be in the middle of a field, and nothing within view, and up pops a dog/hill walker who is determined to talk to you.

Polite conversation ensues.........

That's one reason I wear headphones, I CAN hear you when I want to, or not!

Yeah, sounds like I should wear them all the time!
It is so much easier w/o head phones... but, they can be of advantage...

Here is my trick...
ALWAYS wear headphones...
No matter what...
When someone approaches... act like you do not see em... or make eye contact smile and look immediately back down...
if you hear them talking to you look up like bewildered... and say "what was that you said" and left off one ear phone indicating you cannot hear with them on...
After you do this... even the most persistant person assumes that you cannot hear them anyway and moves on...
ONLY if you keep lifting ... then pretend you don't hear... then lift... slowly working/walking in another direction...
Works for me everytime.

just learn a few words of some obscure language.even a pretend one..smile alot and nod alot.they split pretty quick

I'm the guy in the airport car rental commercial: "I don't have to talk to any humans unless I want to. And I don't."

I am the guy on the TD Bank commercial standing behind the glass door...
"did you just say you will only be a minute" ?
"I am sorry I cannot hear you, we are closed".

That usually happens to me when I'm short on time to hunt (Murphy's Law). Considering your circumstances, you held up well.

When I do hunt with another person, we take turns running interference when someone approaches wanting to partake in lengthy conversation.
The last time that happened, it was his turn to talk and I ended up finding a Barber Quarter and Merc Dime LOL.

Or you could smile and ask them to "Borrow a few bucks because your batteries are dying" that should send them running for the hills, LOL!

Hey great idea...
Best way to get rid of someone usually is to ask them to borrow some money.
Or loan them some.

Outdoorfunblonde, yes it could have been he was just lonely and needed someone to talk to, or perhaps you may have inspired someone to try our hobby.

I know it took your time, but big high five from me on the way you handled it

If I can't hunt it today there is always tomorrow. I waited 4 years one time for a hunt. The kids can be a challenge. Homeless folks scare me. But the girls doing yoga seem to follow me around. I don't mind. Don't have any one with a dog stop yet. Usually I'm talking with parents.

LOL
Murphys law seems to follow me in everything I do!

This happened to me a few weeks ago,but it payed off in a big way,I was detecting at a tot-lot and this guy who has a farm next to the school told me to come on over to his side of the fence.About an hour later after I found every paper clip & bobby pin there was to find,I went over to his side and found several pieces of tractor pieces from the 20'-50's and about 20 wheat pennys:thumbsup:

I get bothered by people in my local park on occasion but on vacation last year my family and I were on cocoa beach I started talking to this guy who was detecting and after awhile he's like I don't have a lot of time I thought oh crap I'm that guy (I haven't bothered anyone since)

OFB, you know damm well why he stopped. Ain't often you see a hot blond out detecting. You need to rent a (1) witch costume and mask, (2) a DPS costume complete with gun and mirror sunglasses or (3) those fake stomachs that makes folks think you weigh 300 lbs. You'll be left alone---I promise...

You could always tell them your parole officer said detecting was a good release for pent up aggression. And throw in a little nervous twitch occasionally. If they persist head for the truck cause they are probably mentally deficient.
