Trusting profiling too much?

On occasion I have gotten the "machine gun" sound from the GTP 1350, and havent dug assuming a large piece of junk. I also havent dug anything that shows larger than a coin. I was reading another post, and was wondering how much I passed over that was more than one coin in a hole, because it showed up larger than a coin. How many of you have pulled more than one coin from a hole, and is it a common occurance? Do I need to turn off profiling and dig the beer can at 8"? Just wondering....

I have on a few occassions. Twice it was at least 50 pennies (all clad) laying together. The way I see it is ,if you think it is a large piece of trash and you don't dig it, then in your mind that is what it was (unless another detectorist comes up and says "Man, look what I found right back there! You must have passed right over it!) ;D Sometimes I dig them and sometimes I don't. I guess I just go with my gut feeling. HH.

I have a GPI 2500 and it has the ability to discriminate out aluminum cans. It will still show a hit on the cans but they sound like the machine gun effect you described. Any time I am working in the "custom"' mode I discriminate out cans and when I hear that distinct tone I know it's a can. Your machine may work similar? JIM

It is similar, I was wondering about that, knowing that one can wont read as another, Hit by a lawnmower and not a complete can etc. What really worried me about notching out can is it falls right between 10 cents and 25 cents on my 1350. I was afraid of missing a coin notching something out one "bar" from the coins.
Nedigger, yea I guess as long as I "think" it is trash, it is ;D. And I dont even know anyone else with a detector...

Dig everything! This time it may be canslaw next time it may be gold chain! What is dismissed as trash could be the top of a mason jar full of cash (or a cache) or a metal box full of rare artifacts and relics! The unknowns are worth the gamble of digging a little trash! HH omnicognic 8)

I've never heard the machine gun sound on the garrett. But i was wondering if it's anything like the sound my detectors have made when i've hit a multi coin hole. When there spread about in a 1 to2 foot area, rather than stacked. Because the leading edge of the coil is passiimg over a coin before the trailing edge has cleared the previous coin. And causing a rapid fire response.

I've found when my coil goes over metal to close to it,esp.alum, it will make that sound.I have to lift my coil a few inches above the ground then scan it and size it to be sure, could be an alum.brief-case.HH.

Dig everything, I learned the hard way, back in the 80s my father and I were hunting a school that was built in the 40's and I passed over a target that I thought was too large and my father hit it and dug up 2 franklin halves and silver washington quarter. Dig it all!!

Point(s) taken, ordering a backup digging tool for when I wear this one out ;D

Joe, I'am pretty sure that if your curser is under the alum. can on your scale? and you've scanned your target size, then it possibly is a can, but I've found some old beer cans that will sell $25-$100+ depending on condition, and like Free said relic's, large button's, civil-war buckels, read larger then coin also.HH.
