I bought a small piece a couple years ago from the Blanchard Rock shop. Interesting place as it's very close to the Trinity Site. (14mi)
The stuff is pricey but I once before talked to the guy ( 20 years ago) that collected them. He had claims near by bordering the White Sands Missile Range. The authorities later dozed the sand where the bomb was detonated so collecting would stop.
The shop has a web page and a Facebook page.

Atomic Glass...1945 Trinity Blast (Manhattan Project)

I am so impressed with the beauty of this special glass, formed within the first 1.5 seconds of the first Atomic blast in history 1945. The desert sand was pulled instantly into the mushroom cloud as well as the everything within a 1100 yard radius of center blast including the bomb material itself, structure, electronics...and converted into this glass material.
Very cool material...especially to photograph.

I subcontracted some work in the mid 90's on a mountain called Oscura Peak overlooking White Sands Missile Range.
On top of the mountain is a Government facility used for experiments. At the time the scientists were shooting lasers
at a mountain across the valley and other stuff. Stuff is defined as never mind stuff.
I could see down several thousand feet into the valley where the bomb was detonated. there was a near perfect circle
in the sand still many years later easily visible.
The site opens to the public two times/year. April (i think) and October. I went once three years ago.
Nothing's allowed to be taken but that's ok as no one wants to glow.
I'm going back as I didn't have time the day I went to see the ranch house where meetings took place. Should make interesting photos.
The scientists would travel to the site through a tiny town called San Antonio, NM and stop there for food. They were riding
with the only 2 kilos of plutonium in the world in a lunch box so I'm told.
The cafe is still there along with another and does a good business especially the two days a year the site is open.

As I have driven to the Treasure Coast from New Mexico, you should be able to drive here to Trinity.:) :0

lunch box full of plutonium...
My father was in the military and worked at the site on the program which followed in the mid 50s. He told me the whole time he was there he never collected 1 piece or had an interest to do so. Many good stories but never about the green glass.
I just started collecting the glass in the past 6 months or so, obtained from a person who actually was a ranch hand back in the day and had in their collection about 11 lbs of the material...yes pricey band getting so so hard to come by at least for the (unique examples) the green is fairly common. Its kinda of like finding a cob at the beach anymore.
I do plan on visiting Trinity site, shooting for the Oct event but probably will the following year...
hvacker, you have taken the drive from NM to here...hopefully to hunt the wreck sites along the beaches and hopeful you found some treasures.
Thx,
Scott

Ya, I wish I could have hunted treasure but at least I made it to the Keys. A whole different Florida.
It's hard to get the Keys out of my mind. Amazing.
I was told to stop chasing the chickens,:)

My father worked on the road to and the first buildings at Los Alamos. I was born in Las Vegas while he was there building test sites. I can make more of these, the framing and cards cost almost $300 so with the photo and trinitite they are not cheap. I can get samples if you are still interested.
