I found this item deep in the woods at a swimming hole that was not widely used, mostly just kids. The swimming hole may have been used historically as it has natural spring a few feet from the commonly used swimming area. The area may have also been used as a camp for the confederate army...

I thought it looked like a trigger guard but don't see how the trigger would have been placed as it seems there is not a space left for it.

It looks like a door knocker to me, but there is no visible area where the "knocker" would attach. A trigger guard is usually a sem-circle, with the top half being part of the gun. Interesting that the two holes in the top are off-set like that.

You can bet that wherever there was good water, that's where the CW soilders set up camp... both Yank and Reb alike...

Where did you find it (state/city) & what are the dimensions?

Loks like a patch box that would be inlaid on the stock of the rifle except the lid is missing. JIM

Pictures of original state and size. I tried to recreate what it would look like whole in the first post. All of the holes go clean through. The spot is right on the edge of an approximate 10' wide stream about 2' away from a deep, three and a half to four foot round fresh water spring that feeds the stream. The stream is also pretty accessable to the Gulf of Mexico in Port Richey,Florida 34668. When I dug for the item at about 8" I hit a flat rock about the size of a football and two smaller rocks, about 4" beneath that was this item.

This is the cleaned up version, when I pulled it from the earth it was heavily encrusted with what looked like rock...

Thanks...
