Slipped out yesterday for a couple quick hours of dirt fishing, which was overall incredibly uneventful. However, I did dig this little item that was reasonably deep, probably 9". It sure looks like a trigger mechanism, but to what I have no idea. Cap gun, real gun? It's ever-so-slightly over 1" in length, weighs 4 grams, has just a bit of chrome finish left on it, and is stamped "280" on the back. If anyone can ID, it would be cool to know. Thanks as always for giving it a look!

My gun knowledge is limited to trade era flintlocks but it doesn’t say trigger to me, it’s too complicated, maybe a bell off of a bicycle?

it reminds me of a latch

The "complication" is probabaly to move the cap gun paper roll. Just a guess. A bike bell lever has a wider thumbprint.

I googled this and it shows some inner workings of some cap guns maybe you can find a match/ cap gun triggers part #2801 also shows#2800

Used the above suggestions to do some additional research, and while I still can't find an exact match, I think it's safe to say this is a vintage cap gun trigger assembly of some kind. Below are some photos of similar trigger mechanisms from the same era. Marking solved.

I've found at least a couple dozen over the years and sometimes I find other parts of the toy gun as well.
