Wingman Tony and I got a hunt in yesterday and Tony found this "trigger".

We have NO idea what it might be off of. I looked at an exploded pic of the .45/50 springfield "trap door" rifle - but don't think that's it.

History of the area is soldiers... Western Indian Wars - 1860s - 1890s. Also woulda' had cowboys and farmers...

Any ideas?

Here's a pic of a cap gun mechanism.

Jim, yours does appear to be "heavy duty" then again, it seems that yours has a ratchet type of advance to advance whatever.

Wonder if hay was every bailed in this field??? Some reason I think this is a twine tentioner off a hay bailer...just a SWAG

Hmmm... possible. This is a grazed field currently... horses.

Do you think you can post a picture of a twine tentioner?

Tony and I spent some time today looking at exploded disgrams for period rifles and pistols. We are fairly sure it's a trigger, and fairly sure the ratcheted end looks like many parts we see atattched to hammers in those diagrams.

Still undecided... I have no additional pics yet...

It looks to me like an old flintlock trigger from a dueling type pistol. I could be wrong but that is what it looks like to me.
