After a recent deep plough I have been dying to try this site but they haven't graded it down yet. Today I decided to go out and break an ankle, just to see whats about, not to grid. Actually, I'm now a little disappointed that what I thought was a deep plough like the others (Brooch Field being 1), is actually only a 6-7 inch turn. So those really deep ones haven't come up. We only spent 1 hour with not much to show;
2 Scrappies
Fibula bit
Roman Bracelet bit
Roman Quern Stone piece

We then decided to finish off the Roman Mansio Site which took us 4 hours of gridding. As I predicted the only coins left are the small & scrappy - 12 coins. It was worth it though because a got a rare Roman Brooch of an Eagle eating a Hare (Hare missing) - a first for us. These are thought to be British made in the late 2nd-3rd C AD.
Other finds included;
Roman Hair Pin
Roman Snake Head Bracelet bit
Nice Tudor Button
Roman Pot Shards
Bits...

Always a nice variety of interesting finds.
Plus I'm learning stuff with every post you make.

Very amazing set of finds there, and I'm very jealous of your hunting grounds! Congrats to you, and please keep posting! :occasion14:

Couple of great relics this trip out.
Too bad you didn't get the deep plough like you wished. Still beats the no-tillage that goes on here.

Love the snake head i read about snakes and there meaning in Ancient times just the other day..

YEP YOU JUST KEEP ON KEEPING ON , FINDING DANG NICE FINDS.

Nice variety of finds it seems! And what a bunch of pottery!

THANKS EVERYONE.

Its only going to get better.......

That eagle and hare brooch is amazing, even with the hare missing. Animal brooches turn up rarely here. Like the quern stone too. On the hoarde site we found our first piece. Looks like they are used down to almost nothing.

Amazing history Cru.
Since they don't ever plow around here I've only had the chance to dig in 3 or 4 deep ploughed fields and I'll admit, it's tiring! I'd have to do some training if I detected in your fields.

I like the finds! Man I would love to help clean up some of those English fields and rid the countryside of some of those pesky scrappies. Even a medieval or before whatsit or a roman shoe nail would be a treasure to me.

I love how almost every time you post, I have to Google for a new word,
explanation, or definition.
And it amazes me that you knew that the eagle was missing the hare attachment.
You and your dad have dug a museum.
Kudos!
Carl
